Shaquala Williams

After completing her first season in the WNBA as a guard, Shaquala Williams begins her coaching career on the Hornet staff. Williams, who helped lead the L.A. Sparks to the WNBA Finals, will deal with film exchange, individual workouts and recruiting while also assisting Dion with the Hornet guards.

A four-year player at Oregon (1999-03) under Muscatell, Williams currently ranks sixth in points (1,478), fifth in assists (369), third in three-pointers made (144) and first in free-throw percentage (.839) in the Oregon career record books. Only one of two players in Oregon history to make the Kodak District All-America team, Williams helped lead the Ducks to back-to-back Pacific-10 titles in 1999 and 2000 while also reaching the NCAA Tournament in 2000 and 2001. The Ducks also won a National Invitational Tournament (NIT) championship in 2002.

Among her other accomplishments, Williams became the programs first player to be named Pac-10 Freshman of the Year (1999) and was also the youngest person to ever receive Pac-10 Player of the Year honors in 2000. She sat out the 2001 season due to a knee injury. A Pac-10 All-Academic selection in 2001, Williams was one of 12 players to compete on the USA Basketball World University Games team in Beijing, China, in the fall of 2000. She was also selected to represent Oregon at the annual NCAA Foundation Leadership Conference as a junior.

Williams, a 1998 graduate of Reynolds High School in Troutdale, Ore., was a USA Today and High School Sports Magazine All-American after leading the state with a 26.4 scoring average while shooting .500 from the floor as a senior. She also averaged 4.3 rebounds, 3.4 assists and shot 80 percent from the free-throw line that same season. In addition, she was also ranked as the 30th best high school player by Streets & Smiths Magazine.

Shaquala is another person that I have coached before and have a very good working relationship with, Muscatell said. Her outstanding individual work ethic is something our kids can model because of her WNBA experience and her understanding of what it takes to play at that level. Shaquala also brings a different way of relating to our players due to experiences in her young life that most of us have not gone through.

This opportunity will also allow her to continue her education in criminal justice as she prepares to go to law school. Its just a great fit for the Hornet family.
